Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was fostered by her mother grandma and godparents. In her childhood, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement on her third attempt, applied and won a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among Ford's classmates. Ford did not finish her studies until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV on the show Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. During the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. The stage was her main focus as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate gained recognition as a stand-up comedian, which became part of her portfolio in 1996.
